Viral Hepatitis

University Gastroenterology is very much involved with many clinical studies concerning Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Dr. Thomas Sepe is the lead physician involved with many of these clinical trials, in coordination with other University GI physicians.  He and his clinical research team are actively enrolling patients.  Many of the trials are cutting edge national studies, providing hope to patients suffering from these illnesses.

Cutting Edge Endoscopy

Many innovative diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are employed by the physicians of University Gastroenterology.  These include Endoscopic Mucosal Resection for early esophageal and gastric malignancies and Cholangioscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult biliary cases.

Newer diagnostic capabilities have been made available by the creative use of Spiral Enteroscopy, developed by Dr. Paul Akerman and his team.  He has developed a unique and useful technique to diagnosis and treat small intestinal lesions.

Small Bowel Imaging Modalities

The introduction of Capsule Endoscopy has allowed for clear imaging of the small intestine. Spearheaded by Dr. Nicholas Califano, this technology is readily available to our patients.

This technology is now available at our sites in Providence and East Greenwich.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Several of our University Gastroenterology physicians are recognized specialists in the management and diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.  Dr. Sheldon Lidofsky has been instrumental in the organization of the OSCCAR (Ocean State Crohn’s & Colitis Area Registry) study, sponsored in conjunction with the National Institute of Health and the IBD Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Barrett’s Esophagus

New modalities for the treatment of this disease have been developed.  One of the new treatments for Barrett’s Esophagus with dysphasia is the use of radiofrequency ablation (BARRX).  This new technology is being used by several physicians at University Gastroenterology, including Drs. Joseph Pianka, William Chen, and Paul Akerman, making this treatment modality available at our Providence and Newport sites.

University Gastroenterology Network

We at University Gastroenterology recognize that even our best attempts may require additional consultative assistance.  We have established a very close working relationship with the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for those patients who may need additional super specialist care.
